Appearance
A sturdy, compact body on short powerful legs, a broad chest and a round head with full cheeks give the breed its classic "teddy bear" look. The coat is dense and plush, with a pronounced undercoat that feels velvety to the touch. The standard recognises dozens of colours and patterns, from solid blue to colourpoint and marbled tabby.
Temperament
British Shorthairs are independent without being distant: they enjoy being near their owner without demanding constant attention. Cats of this breed are rarely clingy, cope well with being alone during the day, and get along easily with children and other pets.
A little history
The breed descends from ordinary British domestic cats, which began to be bred selectively from the second half of the 19th century for a sturdy build and dense coat. Today the British Shorthair is one of the most popular breeds in the world.
Who it suits
An easy-going nature and low-maintenance care make British Shorthairs a good choice for families with children, older owners and people who spend much of the day away from home. That doesn't mean the cat needs no attention — its need for play and company is the same as any other cat's, just expressed less insistently.
